‘The Cuban Place’ behind QVB

I had dinner at The Cuban Place restaurant with a few girlfriends last month and absolutely loved their paella, white wine sangria and semifreddo (or ice cream cake). They had this quirky graffiti wall where we wrote our names and just a really fun, summery, lively and buzzy atmosphere. So JET and I headed back there last Wednesday because we were craving their cool, refreshing sangria.

The Cuban Place Restaurant (formerly under a more complicated name: ‘La Bodeguita del Medio Sydney’) is designed to look like a 1950s restaurant/bar in Havana. The bar is in a separate area with its own street entrance and specializes in rum which is a key ingredient for Mojitos. Apparently the Mojito was born at the real ‘La Bodeguita del Medio’ in Havana where Ernest Hemmingway famously wrote ‘My Mojito in La Bodeguita’.

JET had Tamales Rellenos (Lentil & corn truffle, served with sour cream, Cuban bread & a quinoa salad, $28). She particularly liked the salad and the crispy, salty Cuban bread.

I ate the Pollo Relleno (Spiced chicken thigh with a chorizo & cashew stuffing, served with a quinoa & papaya salad, $29). The stuffed chicken dipped into the tangy sauce was the perfect mix of salty and spicy and the papaya salad was refreshing.

We shared a jug of white wine sangria ($20). With a hint of lime and mint, it was the perfect thirst quencher for the hot Sydney summer.

The service was great and the food was delicious. I still believe the Paella Criolla ($49 for 2 people) is the best dish I have had there. So I recommend going with a group of people to share a meal and enjoy the lively atmosphere and Cuban/Spanish music (which I hear, is sometimes live).

Head there now, after visiting the Gaffa exhibition maybe??
