5 Ways to Spend Australia Day

The 26th of January is not only my Daddy’s birthday but also the day that the First Fleet of British ships arrived at Sydney Cove in 1788. So every year, we have a public holiday for Australia Day.

I’m hardly ever in Sydney during this long weekend because I’m usually in Brisbane spending time with my dad. Although this year I will be in Melbourne for my lovely friend KT’s hen’s party!

So I turned to a couple of Sydney-siders, Mari (who writes her own blog here ) and my boyfriend for recommendations on what to do in Sydney for Australia Day. Here are their 5 suggestions catering to whatever mood you are in (and you should quickly be able to tell who recommended what).

1. If you’re feeling relaxed and just want to chill out in your shorts, T-shirt and thongs (that’s footwear for non-Australians), invite your friends for a barbecue on the beach and listen to local radio station Triple J’s Hottest 100 Countdown . Include Aussie favourites like sausage rolls (recipe here), meat pies, Pavlova, lamingtons and cakes with Aussie flag decorations!

2. If you feel like staying indoors and dressing up in a pretty dress and sparkly shoes, book a High Tea at the Park Hyatt overlooking the Opera House with a few girlfriends.
Afterwards, hop on board a Vintage Sydney bus and ride around town like the locals did in the olden days!

3. If you’re feeling energetic and want to work off some of those holiday kilos, catch a ferry to Watson’s Bay and walk across Dover Heights to Bondi. Enjoy a long walk, spectacular views and a delicious feed and coffee at one of the many cafes in Bondi at the end.

4. If you need some major brownie points with your boyfriend, book tickets to the Cricket to watch Australia play against India at the SCG. This is the first time this match is being played in Sydney instead of Adelaide, so book your tickets asap!

5. Again if you urgently need brownie points…. or genuinely enjoy the soccer (which is much shorter than the cricket), book tickets to the Asian Cup soccer game. If everything goes according to plan, you could be cheering on the Soceroos on Australia Day.

Have a great Australia Day long weekend!
