It’s the day after my birthday and it’s windy and raining, the first really cold day for the year. But the miserable weather is soon forgotten when my boyfriend surprises me with a delicious birthday morning tea at the Gunners Barracks in Mosman!
The Gunners’ Barracks was built in 1873 and used as the barracks for the artillery men at Georges Head. It’s a beautiful sandstone building that is now used for functions and in particular, has the ‘Tea Room’ for delightful morning and afternoon high teas.
We are served almost immediately after selecting our ‘Traditional Afternoon Tea’.
The three tiers are filled with all kinds of delicious treats. There is a plate of tasty sandwiches on the bottom tier made with soft, freshly baked bread and filled with egg and mayo, roast beef and caramelized onion, and tuna and corn.
The top two tiers are filled with small, sample-sized pieces of of raspberry flavoured brownies, lemon macarons, beetroot and strawberry flavoured jelly slices, almond and orange cake and passionfruit puddings.
We are also served a separate plate filled with two scones with clotted cream and jam, deep fried samosas filled with chickpeas and parmesan and mushroom cream tarts.
It’s all delicious. The staff are attentive and kind. The location is beautiful. The view is perfect. Despite being first thing in the morning, we don’t mind filling up on delicious treats and fragrant tea (vanilla black tea for me, Irish breakfast for him).
My boyfriend certainly knows how to pick a good place to celebrate my birthday! I highly recommend high tea with friends, family or your significant other at the Gunner’s Barracks.
